How to clean a conventional microwave oven

Sometimes, when you look at your microwave oven, you may get disgusted by how dirty it might have gotten. Just a plate of rice or gravy could turn your squeaky clean microwave into a greasy mess. At that point, you might be wondering, “How do I clean this mess?” and we will help you with exactly that.

What needs to be cleaned in a microwave oven?

Microwave ovens are electric devices that could be dangerous if not dealt with safely. Hence knowing about what specific parts you need to clean becomes utterly important. Your oven has two major parts that require cleaning; the outside and the inside. The outside consists of the body and the door, whereas the interior has three walls, two of which are netted.

The inside might get dirty with food splatter, and dust may get accumulated in the outside part. You need to safely clean the netted walls on the inside, including the door’s inner part and the outer walls of the oven, including the fan at the back.

How to clean a microwave oven in several different ways?

You have learned by now that microwave cleaning is not like any other type of cleaning because it requires you to take extra safety precautions. Here are some ways to help you clean your dirty microwave oven.

  1. Using vinegar to clean: Add 2-3 tablespoons of vinegar to a microwave-safe bowl filled with water. Keep it in the oven on high heat for 5 to 6 minutes. After this, let the bowl sit in there for another 15 minutes, so the grease becomes soft. Now take the bowl out and gently wipe away the softened grease with a kitchen towel. If any spots are left, scrub them away using a sponge soaked in the water-vinegar mixture.
  2. Using a kitchen towel to clean dirt from outside: use a regular kitchen towel to clean the outside walls of your microwave, making sure it is not connected to any electricity source.
  3. Using lemon to clean: repeat the process explained in point #1.
  4. Using the conventional method: you can use a soap’s lather along with a sponge to clean the inner dirt and a window cleaner to make your microwave shiny. Gently scrub all the grease away with a sponge dipped in soap and water mixture. Spray the window cleaner on the door and turn-table to make them shiny.

What to pay attention to while cleaning a dirty microwave oven?

A dirty microwave oven threatens your health; hence cleaning it becomes even more important. But, several things could give birth to greater problems than a dirty oven if you are not careful. A microwave oven is an electrical device, so you need to be 100% sure that it is not connected to an electricity source when you’re scrubbing it. Then, avoid using any steel or shiny utensils to perform cleaning, so no sparking happens in your machine.

Finally, use the method best suited to the type of dirt accumulated on your microwave oven and make sure to follow all the safety precautions.
